On Friday, May 17, Oakland Zoo will host a "Celebrating Elephants" evening presentation featuring guest speaker Ed Stewart, Co-Founder of Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and leader in animal welfare and rescue. Since 1984, PAWS has been at the forefront of efforts to rescue and provide appropriate, humane sanctuary for animals who have been victims of the exotic and performing animal trades. This 17th annual event will be in honor and memory of Pat Derby, Co-Founder and Director of PAWS. Mr. Stewart will captivate the audience with stories about elephant rescues, special bonds he's had with pachyderms, and the constant care that goes into these enormous animals. Currently, PAWS is home to five Asian and three African elephants. Their elephant habitat and sanctuary provides all eight elephants with hundreds of acres of natural terrain to roam and forage, waterholes to bathe in, and specially designed elephant barns, equipped with heated stalls and Jacuzzis. For nearly thirty years, Ed Stewart has dedicated his career to helping save animals from terrible situations. Oakland Zoo invites the public to participate in an evening centered on elephants. The "Celebrating Elephants" evening begins at 6:00pm in the Zoo's Snow Building with a reception and silent auction, followed by a presentation at 7:00pm. Appetizers and beverages will be served. The cost for this event is $40 per person. All proceeds raised will support Amboseli Trust for Elephants Amboseli Trust for Elephants. For more information, please call 510-632-9525.
