Nature and Science Based Worskhops and Classes

Oakland Zoo is proud to partner with local school districts, colleges and universities to offer inquiry-based science and environmental education programs, Pre-K through University. Our K-12 programs actively support CA State, Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards and practices. Our college and university partnerships provide post-secondary and graduate students with unique opportunities to learn about animal behavior, research, and veterinary medicine.

Wildlife Assembly

Wildlife Assembly is a 45-minute interactive program exclusive to your school. It is hosted by an Oakland Zoo Education Specialist, who will discuss animal adaptations through games, songs and a live animal presentation. After your program ends, your class, using their honed observational skills, will venture out into the Zoo to explore at your own pace. This program is great for large groups with multiple classes and multiple age ranges.

ZooKids: Pre-K programs

Does your little one love animals? ZooKids classes are a great way for children age 4-5 to have a fun and educational adventure at the Zoo. Each program includes a mini zoo tour, craft, games, animal close-up, and snack.

ZooMobile & School-based Classes

Discover the Wonders of the World's Wildlife with a ZooMobile Program! An Oakland Zoo ZooMobile program will bring animal ambassadors to you! An educator will bring small animals and animal artifacts to teach grade or group appropriate topics. A myriad of ZooMobile outreach programs have been tailored to meet the needs of your group.

ZooSchool: Zoo-based Classes & Workshops

ZooSchool Explorer's Club is a unique program designed for school groups. An Education Specialist will lead activities and discussions in one of our Education Classrooms and take your group on a guided tour of the Zoo. There are different age appropriate activities for each grade level and after your 2 1/2 hour program you are welcome to stay in the Zoo for lunch and more self guided exploration.

Special Tours

Want a special guided tour by somenone who loves animals just as much as you do? We have the perfect person: a docent. Docents are a select group of adult volunteers who have completed a special training course. They are very knowledgeable about the animals at the Oakland Zoo and love to educate and inspire visitors. Docent led tours are appropiate for anyone ages 5 and up. Motorized cart tours are also available.

Zoo-to-Community: Free programs

The Oakland Zoo provides free science education programs through its Zoo-to-Community initiative for at-risk and underserved students attending Title 1 schools in the East Bay.

Internships

Ever wonder what it is like to care for a giraffe, alligator, hornbill or hyena? If you are interested in learning about animal husbandry then volunteering or interning for the Oakland Zoo's Animal Care department could be for you. We are looking for hard working individuals who respect animals and don't mind getting dirty. So break out those work boots and khaki pants and come to one of our volunteer orientations. Animal Care volunteers and interns are an important part of providing the best care we care for our animals. Come be part of the experience.
