"The Fate of the Apes: Gorillas and Chimpanzees in the 21st Century."

9/10/2006

Oakland, CA – The Oakland Zoo presents “The Fate of the Apes: Gorillas and chimpanzees in the 21st Century” by Dr. Craig Stanford on Thursday, September 14, 2006 from 6:30pm to 9:00pm. Enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres while bidding on unique animal-themed treasures at the Reception and Silent Auction. The Lecture will begin at 7:30pm.

Dr. Craig Stanford is an internationally renowned primatologist who has studied chimpanzees, mountain gorillas and other primates in Africa, Asia and Latin America. He is the author of 10 books and more than 100 scientific publications on great apes and human origins; his most recent books include "Upright" (Houghton-Mifflin, 2003), "Significant Others" (Basic Books, 2001), and the forthcoming Beautiful Minds: Dolphins, Apes and the Roots of Human Intelligence (co-authored by Maddalena Bearzi, Harvard Univ. Press). Stanford is Professor of Anthropology and Biological Sciences at the University of Southern California, and Director of USC's Jane Goodall Research Center.

Funds raised from the lecture and silent auction benefit the Snare Removal Program for the Budongo Forest Reserve, Uganda. The Oakland Zoo’s support covers the salaries for four field assistants, two educators, two ecoguards, and allowances for transportation and bike repair, gum boots, rain gear, backpacks, and compasses. The Oakland Zoo undertook the funding of the project in the 2001-2002 fiscal year and has made a commitment to continue its support.

The event will be held in the Maddie's Center for Science and Environmental Education located in the lower Zoo. Donations of $20 will be accepted at the door.
