Oakland Zoo Presents – Wildlife Painting’s – Exhibit by artist Rita Sklar

The Oakland Zoo is proud to host an exhibit of watercolor paintings by local artist, Rita Sklar. Inspired by the inherent beauty and value of wildlife, Sklar uses watercolor to capture images of nature.

WHEN:
May 11 through September 14, 2007. Open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

WHERE:
Oakland Zoo – Maddie’s Center for Science and Environmental Education – Lobby - 9777 Gold Links Road, Oakland.

COST:
Free to the public with regular zoo admission.

Sklar’s works are in private collections across the country and in Europe. She has won awards from the San Francisco Women Artists, the Oakland Art Association, the Frank Bette Gallery, the California Watercolor Association, the Pacific Wildlife Gallery, and the San Leandro Art Association.

Three series’ of paintings will be on display:

Mother Love features paintings of mothers with their young. Images vary from elephants at a watering hole to birds in their nest.

Vanishing Species reflect Sklar’s longing for a resolution to the threats facing wildlife today, from overhunting to loss of habitat.

Birds in Flight reflect a balance between the reality of representational shapes juxtaposed with abstract backgrounds.

Sklar’s works are in private collections across the country and in Europe. She has won awards from the San Francisco Women Artists, the Oakland Art Association, the Frank Bette Gallery, the California Watercolor Association, the Pacific Wildlife Gallery, and the San Leandro Art Association.

The public is invited to join the Zoo in an opening celebration on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13, from 1:00-2:30 p.m.

The award-winning Oakland Zoo is home to over 440 native and exotic animals. Nestled in the Oakland Hills, in 525 acre Knowland Park, the Zoo is located at 9777 Golf Links Road, off Highway 580.
