New Otter Arrives at Oakland Zoo

Oakland, CA- One-year-old River Otter new to the Oakland Zoo! For the past few weeks, the young otter has been adjusting to her new home and is slowly being introduced to her male companions. “She is still a little shy. So, when guests visit the Otter Exhibit in the Children’s Zoo, they will notice she is separated from the other two otters,” says Animal Keeper Andrea Dougall. While in her exhibit, she enjoys swimming in her pool, eating fish popsicle treats, and is very curious about visitors.
The young female otter was born at the Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford, Massachusetts. She was recommended to the Oakland Zoo through the Population Management Plan for North American River Otters. Zoo keepers hope to breed her next year with Oakland Zoo’s nine-year-old otter.
