Take the Oakland Zoo Butterfly Garden Challenge!
As many of you know, butterflies and other pollinators are in danger due to habitat loss, pesticide use and the introduction of invasive species. The good news is many of our members have learned how to help butterflies by attending our Family Butterfly Garden Day (April 9th) or visiting our Butterfly Garden and Education Center.
The Oakland Zoo Barbara W. Robbins Butterfly Garden is at total of 120 square feet of blooming habitat for butterflies, caterpillars and other pollinators and we are proud of it. But what we are really inspired by is how many of you have taken action by planting butterfly gardens in your own yards.
As an Oakland Zoo Conservation Community working together, we can give the butterflies what they really need: patches of pollinator habitat creating connected areas or corridors everywhere!
What is the Oakland Zoo Butterfly Garden Challenge?
This is a call to action for all of our members to plant as much butterfly habitat as we can, record it, and cheer each other on! Remember, even a window box is a wonderful contribution to hungry butterflies.
We will calculate our total Oakland Zoo Butterfly Garden Square Footage each quarter and print the grand total in the ROAR. We would also like to honor you butterfly conservationists by collecting your photos, observations, drawings and experiences of butterfly gardening and including a sample of them in our ROAR report. Fantastic drawings and reports about butterflies will be displayed in our Education Center lobby for Earth Day (April 17, 2005).
