Schedule and Salary

Days: Monday – Friday, Mandatory planning/training June 11-15, camp runs June 18 through August 17, 2018.

Hours: 8:15 am to 4:45 pm, This is a day camp program without overnight activities.

Dates: June 11, 2018–August 17, 2018

Notes: We are also hiring for general ZooCamp instructor positions (for grades pre-K through 5th). In your cover letter, please indicate if you applying for the Wild Survivor teacher position so there is no confusion.

Salary: $13.23 - $15/hour, depending on experience, no benefits

Classification: Non-Exempt

How to Apply


ZooCamp is a summer day camp program run by the Education Department at Oakland Zoo. Each session is one week long and programs repeat multiple times each summer. The ideal candidate for this position has a love for tweens/preteens and the outdoors. Prior experience working with middle school students in day camp or childcare settings is required. Personal experience hiking, camping, backpacking, and using wilderness survival skills is especially desirable. Formal training in biology, zoology, ecology, or environmental science is also a plus. For summer 2018, we have one open position working with our Wild Survivor program.


  1. Teach a small group of campers grades 6th-8th under the supervision of the ZooCamp Director. In this capacity, be the primary care-giver and supervisor for a group of 10-12 children each week.
  2. Utilize the zoo and the beautiful surrounding park and creek to introduce campers to survival skills such as water collection, fire building, shelter building, plant identification and orienteering.
  3. Implement programs that are imaginative, fun, hands-on, and centered on animals and ecology (based on the given theme).
  4. Leave campers with a greater sense of ecological wonder, connection, respect and stewardship.
  5. Mentor Teen Assistant volunteers in the skills required to work successfully with young children
  6. Be a supportive team member by sharing ideas, assisting others, and participating in weekly staff meetings.
  7. Follow Department Operating Principals and ZooCamp Protocols


Required Capabilities

Required Education

Background in biology/zoology/environmental studies/related field or education (teaching credential desirable, high school diploma required.)

Required Experience

  2. Experience working with middle school students in an educational setting required
  3. Zoo/nature center/museum/camp interpretive experience preferred
  4. Experience camping, backpacking, or other outdoor activities preferred
  5. Training in wilderness survival skills preferred
  6. Ability to relate with warmth and enthusiasm to preteens
  7. Ability to manage participant behavior and the social environment within a small group of preteen participants
  8. Ability to maintain a safe environment
  9. Excellent communication skills
  10. Excellent organizational skills
  11. Ability to troubleshoot and think on your feet
  12. Ability to work as part of a team
  13. Dependability and promptness
  14. Ability to walk the zoo grounds and be outside for long periods of time
  15. Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
  16. Must provide recent TB screening results prior to employment
  17. 1st Aid/CPR certified preferred
