Primate Discovery Day

Don’t Miss Primate Discovery Days!

Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 | 10am – 3pm

Swing like siamangs and leap like lemurs for a day of hands-on, tails-on adventures. Games, activities, learning, prizes, and of course, amazing animals await you on a day that supports primate conservation through the Budongo Snare Removal Project. This event is FREE with general admission. Laughter, learning, culture and fun; there is so much that humans and primates have in common, yet so little that most of us really know. The Oakland Zoo wants to share some of these primate secrets with you. Bring your family and learn what makes these animals so special, and how we are working to protect them. Special activities include a primate scavenger hunt, fun interactive booths, face painting, wild life trivia, and a chance to make enrichment (or toys) for the Primates.

Primate Lecture and Silent Auction

Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 | 6:30pm

We are very excited to welcome Shirley McGreal to the Oakland Zoo for our annual lecture and auction! She is the founder of international Primate Protection League (IPPL). She is a powerful speaker and probably the world's most important watchdog for primate conservation and protection issues. The evening will also feature direct reports of Budongo from the teen travel team that have recently visited the project. The Speaker Series event begins with a reception at 6:30pm, followed by the lecture at 7:00pm. Cost: Members $10-$20 donation, Non-Members $12-$20 donation. Oakland Zoo's Conservation Speaker Series is held in the Marian Zimmer Auditorium of Maddie's Center for Science and Environmental Education. Lecture, Auction, and Primate Discovery Day Proceeds Support the Budongo Snare Removal Project The Oakland Zoo has adopted the Snare Removal Program for the Budongo Forest Reserve, Uganda. Our support covers the salaries for four field assistants, two educators, two eco-guards, and allowances for transportation, bike repair, gum boots, rain gear, backpacks, and compasses. We undertook the funding of the project in 2001 and have made a commitment to continue support.

Vice Presidential Debate

As the Vice Presidential Debate is on October 2nd, we will be broadcasting the Debate at our event, before Shirley McGreal Speaks. Come listen and watch in the good company of conservationists while enjoying refreshments and shopping at the silent auction. Doors will open at 6 pm in order to catch the beginning of the debate.
