Journey and Badge Overnights
We pack all the fun of our Journey and Badge workshops into overnights at the Oakland Zoo! See what the Zoo is like at night after all the guests have gone home. You will get to visit the Children’s Zoo at night, meet an animal ambassador up close, and have a tasty snack before bed. After you snuggle down in the comfort of our Education Center at night, enjoy a tasty continental breakfast before heading out into the zoo for a private tour as the animals wake up!
We offer the following overnights:
Brownies Wonders of Water: Based on this leadership Journey, Brownies will dive into learning about their part in the water cycle. They’ll go on an aquatic scavenger hunt in the Children’s Zoo, explore watersheds and wildlife at the Arroyo Viejo Creek, and meet an animal close-up. They’ll leave with a drought-tolerant native plant and a water drop promise to bring the water conservation message back to their own watersheds.
Brownies Bugs: Come to Oakland Zoo to learn a bit about bugs! You will never want to tell a bug to “buzz” off again after you spend the night at the Zoo. Learn exactly what makes a bug a bug by illustrating some of their common body parts. You will also have the chance to meet some of our resident Zoo bugs by visiting them in their own home here at the Zoo. Don’t forget about our native bugs which you will have a chance to make a ‘take-home habitat.’
Juniors Get Moving: In this leadership Journey, Juniors get wild about energy as they explore the ecological energy cycle. They’ll learn how to do an energy audit, explore animal migration on a Zoo tour, meet an animal close-up, and make conservation promise beads. They’ll leave with a seeded pollinator plant and a plan to sow conservation practices in their community.
Juniors Animal Habitats: Come find out how important it is to preserve an animal’s habitat. You will investigate many different animals here at the Zoo and learn about each ones unique habitat. You also will learn a bit about what makes each one of these animals an expert at living in their habitat. After you will have a chance to design your own habitat for an animal. Before you go you will also have the opportunity to help keep the wild habitat around the Zoo clean and healthy for all the animals that live there.
Cadettes “Night Owls”: What happens in the zoo after dark? Cadettes will explore Oakland Zoo after the sun goes down, meet nocturnal animals up close and personal, and investigate how well their own senses work without light. Add in a creative art/science project or two, and you will have earned your Night Owl badge by the time you head home in the morning.
Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors Zoo Careers: What does it take to keep animals healthy in the zoo? What exactly does a veterinarian do? What kinds of jobs exist that work with animals? Find the answers to all these questions and more at an overnight designed especially for cadet scouts. See what the zoo is like at night after all the guests have gone home. Go behind-the-scenes to see firsthand how our animals are cared for, and make enrichment for our zoo animals. After you snuggle down in the comfort of our Education Center at night, enjoy a tasty continental breakfast before heading out into the zoo for a private tour to watch the animals enjoy what you made just for them!
Enrichment (For any age or mixed age groups)
In this overnight guests learn how they can make the lives of Zoo animals, pets, and native wildlife more enriching and fun! You’ll learn all about how biologists design projects to encourage natural behaviors of zoo animals and then take a tour to study them. Then, you will get to make your enrichment craft with your group. In the morning, you then deliver your project to study the effects, and explore how to improve the lives of wildlife in your own backyards before heading home.
Zoo Snoops (For any age or mixed age groups)
It's a mystery; so, put your thinking caps on! Groups will work together using the clues that lead to each animal on our tour. You will learn about each animal we discover along the way from an Oakland Zoo Education Specialist. You may end up behind-the-scenes or face-to-face with an animal to meet and touch!
*All Girl Scout Overnights include an animal close-up with one of Oakland Zoo's animal ambassadors.
