Explore the Zoo

When visiting the Oakland Zoo, we welcome you to explore the Zoo's many biomes (Geographically defined areas) and learn about animals that live in particular regions.  Learn about the elephant's habitat, where river otters come from, and why Oakland Zoo's bats love fruit.

African Savannah

The African Savannah is a focal point of the Zoo. Its central location between the Tigers and Lions makes the Savannah an easily accessible meeting point for families with excellent viewing opportunities for a variety of species.

Rain Forest

In 2001, the Oakland Zoo completed construction of a lush, tropical rainforest area in the central part of the Zoo. This habitat, complete with naturalistic rockwork, vines, climbing structures and lush foliage, houses a number of animals including our beautiful pair of Tigers in their spacious habitat. A mural spans the trail leading from the Tiger viewing area through the Yellow Anaconda's habitat and ends with the Blue & Yellow Macaws.

Wayne and Gladys Valley Children's Zoo

The Oakland Zoo celebrated the Grand Opening of the Wayne and Gladys Valley Children's Zoo on July 16, 2005. This four acre exhibit, located within the Oakland Zoo, is part zoo, part children's museum and part playground. Designed to be a fanciful world of discovery, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Children's Zoo encourages children to learn through exploration and play.
