The Oakland Zoo presents a day to celebrate and honor elephants. Did you know an elephant's heart weighs forty pounds? Do elephants really have an excellent memory? Find out the answers to fascinating facts and much more
from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Saturday, May 26. Festivities are included with general admission.
Family friendly activities will include exciting elephant stations such as touching gigantic pachyderm bones, holding an eleven-pound tooth, and stepping into an elephant-sized footprint. Grab binoculars and participate in a mock research camp where observers are invited to watch and record behaviors, and they can learn how to tell Oakland Zoo's four elephants apart. Plus, experience the once-a-year opportunity to tour the elephant barn and see an elephant up-close for $ 5.00. New in 2012, the tour will include an inside look at Osh's new barn (male elephant). A posh pad complete with heating, high ceilings, and special bedding to support his 12,000 build was recently completed. In the Wayne and Gladys Valley Children's Zoo, visitors are invited watch Circus Finelli, an animal free circus performance with comedy, acrobatics, juggling, dance, and live music.
"Celebrating Elephants Day is the most fun that you and your family can have while you help save elephants in the wild. Come for a day of adventure and leave knowing that you have helped the Oakland Zoo protect elephants in Africa," said Colleen Kinzley, Director of Animal Care, Conservation, and Research at Oakland Zoo. For more information about Celebrating Elephants, please call 510-632-9525 or visit the zoo website at http://www.oaklandzoo.org.
