African Savannah

The African Savannah is a focal point of the Zoo. Its central location between the Tigers and Lions makes the Savannah an easily accessible meeting point for families with excellent viewing opportunities for a variety of species.

lion_web.jpgThe picturesque African Savannah showcases our growing herd of reticulated giraffes, including the world famous Tiki and her new coat, and Tiki's latest grand child born in May 2008. Accompanying our herd are East African Crowned Cranes, Dama Gazelles, Elands, Griffon Vultures, Egyptian Geese, and flocks of Mallard Ducks who are an unofficial part of the Savannah.

Our ZooMobile Toyota Prius, Sunrise, proudly displays colorful African Savannah images, inspiring waves and smiles wherever we go. The hybrid vehicle allows us to show by example that we all can walk the talk and contribute to cleaner air and a more sustainable environment.

The Oakland Zoo is committed to providing the best animal care and species specific habitats for all of our animals. In the coming years the Zoo will continue to improve the Savannah including the addition of new Giraffe barns to accommodate our growing family.
