History

Founded in 1922 by naturalist Henry A. Snow, the Oakland Zoo is an 85 year-old regional treasure. The non-profit East Bay Zoological Society took over the Zoo in 1983 and brought Dr. Joel J. Parrott, DVM to be Executive Director. Dr. Parrott has spent the past 25 years improving the Zoo for animals and visitors. Learn more about our history and the Society below.

Future Planning

The future is bright at the Oakland Zoo. We have big dreams and plans that will transform the Zoo and put us on the map as one of the most recognized Zoos in the country, especially for our humane treatment of animals and our world-wide conservation efforts. Expanded programs, added exhibits and a new veterinary medical hospital will make your Oakland Zoo experience even more enjoyable.
