The Gondola Mechanic assists with routine duties in the maintenance and repair of the Oakland Zoo Arial Lifts and other maintenance projects as assigned. This position requires work on weekends, holidays and occasional overtime as deemed necessary by the Department Supervisor. Upholds the mission and values established the Conservation Society of California (the “Zoo”) and adheres to policies and procedures as set forth by the Zoo.
Inspect mechanical devices and perform necessary repairs of mechanical devices daily
Inspect electrical devices and perform necessary repairs of electrical devices daily
Assist Lead Tech. with testing and inspection of mechanical devices and the repair of mechanical devices daily
Assist Lead Tech. with testing and inspection of electrical devices and the repair of electrical devices daily
Ability to install large and heavy components related to tower and gondola maintenance
Ability to work independently on mechanical and electrical systems related to Gondolas
Ability and willingness to learn Arial Systems (the Gondola and Sky Ride) as well as the other mechanical rides in the Zoo
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Responsible for performing all routine and assigned maintenance per A.N.S.I., manufacturer, and CSC Lift Department standards.
Responsible for communicating to the Lift Manager to immediately inform and consult him/her on all abnormal or unusual conditions, incidents, observations or system malfunctions.
Performs Gondola startup procedures upon qualification in Gondola dynamics and potential safety related conditions.
Performs Evacuation Engine hook-ups and Gondola operation using Evacuation Drive system.
Documents tramway maintenance per the A.N.S.I. Code. Participates in Gondola projects, inspections, procedures and check lists.
Maintains a clean shop and keeps tools in top condition.
Uses assigned tools, rigging equipment, tramway components, oils, greases, and safety equipment in a safe, efficient manner.
Assists in cable splicing, cable installation, and/or replacement. Assists contractors in performing their duties.
Inspects, measures, changes, rebuilds and adjusts Gondola components. Checks oil in reducers and all gear type units. Greases bearings, bushings and sliding surfaces.
Must be able to work at heights in all weather
Demonstrates superior customer service with customers, both internal (i.e. co-workers) and external (vendors, visitors, customers, etc).

Ability to exercise sound judgment, be a self-starter and work with minimal supervision.
Basic knowledge/skill/ability needed in the mechanical trade.
Basic knowledge/skill/ability needed in the electrical trade.
Able to bend and twist, lift, stand, kneel, sit, walk, bend, stoop and speak regularly and for long periods of time (8 hour shifts)
Must be able to work on towers and at heights in all weather
Possess an active Class “C” California Driving License and clean driving history
Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
Availability to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays at short notice
High school diploma or GED or greater
Ability to read and write clearly in English
Trade school experience a desired
ANSI B77.1 2011
2 years in mechanical trades (auto, machinery repair or machining)
Basic knowledge/skill/ability needed in the welding trade.
1-2 years in Gondola specific maintenance of controls, mechanical, electrical, operational and documentation
2 years experience in rigging
Lock Out / Tag Out procedures
Fall protection and Rescue
Must be willing to training classes as needed
