Come down to the Oakland Zoo to learn a bit about bugs! You will never want to tell a bug to "buzz" off again after you spend a few hours at the Zoo. Come down and learn exactly what makes a bug a bug by illustrating some of their common body parts. You will also have the chance to meet some of our resident bugs by visiting them in their homes here at the Zoo.
Come find out how important it is to preserve an animal's habitat. You will investigate many different animals here at the Zoo and learn about each ones unique habitat. You also will learn a bit about what makes each one of these animals an expert at living in their habitat and design your own habitat for an animal.
Please note that Journey workshops only meet a portion of what is required in the Journey. Girl Scouts will not complete their entire Journey by attending these workshops.
Based on this leadership Journey, Daisies learn how best to take care of pets and steward wildlife. They'll investigate how animals communicate, how birds make nests, and make their own "All About Me" nests out of natural materials. After going on a mini zoo tour and meeting an animal up-close, they'll leave with their own ideas to educate others about animal care and wildlife conservation.
Based on this leadership Journey, Brownies will dive into learning about their part in the water cycle. They'll go on an aquatic scavenger hunt in the Children's Zoo, explore watersheds and wildlife at the Arroyo Viejo Creek, and meet an animal close-up. They'll leave with a water drop promise to bring the water conservation message back to their own watersheds.
In this leadership Journey, Juniors get wild about energy as they explore the ecological energy cycle. They'll learn how to do an energy audit, explore animal migration on a Zoo tour, meet an animal close-up, and make conservation promise beads.
Did you know that the Oakland Zoo is involved in conservation partnerships around the world? In this special Journey workshop, girls will learn about some of the zoo’s conservation projects and help us with our work. In the first portion of the program, they will make observations, learn to collect data like real scientists, design their own field notebook, and meet one of our Education animals up close. After a lunch break, girls will complete a citizen science project right here in the zoo! Finally, the group will brainstorm their Take Action project together so they are ready to share their work with their community.
Hours: 9:30am–2:30pm
